Fall 1997
Ashe Hussein and Steve Bienstock meet at Sirmish paintball field at a RCPC sponsored paintball event. On the bus ride back they decide to start a paintball club.
After discussing this with Recreation Services, a constitution is signed and the club officially comes into existence. Steve Bienstock, Ashe Hussein and Tom Rac are the first three officers.
Spring 1998
The club begins to gather members and attends the OnTarget 3-man speedball tournament where they come in 10th and 11th out of 11. Towards the end of the semester, Steve Bienstock becomes President and Alex Elliott becomes Vice-President.
Fall 1998
At the activites fair, 250 people sign up for the paintball club. Of those about 70 actually emailed back expressing interest. Of that 70, only Ken Carter actually stayed with the club.
Spring 1999
The club goes as a group to Top Gun paintball games in Jackson, NJ. Membership is slowly growing as more people find out about the club. Unfortunately, due to scheduling restrictions the club often has to practice at 9 a.m. on a Sunday. This coupled with some growing pains means this semester is a bit of a bust.
Fall 1999
Alex Elliott takes over as president and Steve Bienstock takes over VP duties. Thanks to experience gained from previous semesters regarding funding and dues structures, the club starts to take off. The club sends three five man teams to the Skirmish paintball tournament with the top team placing 4th out of 8 in its division. Total club membership reaches 36 members.
Spring 2000
This semester proves to be one of the busiest for the RUPC. In Februrary they take 20 people to the Skirmish/Dollack 12 hour scenario game. They also planned to attend the 5 man tournament at Skirmish in April. However, after driving 96 miles of the 100 miles to Skirmish in a blizzard, the team couldn't make it up the hill. Fortunately, the tournament was cancelled.
The North East Intercollegiate Conference(NEIC), after several years of inactivity, had a tournament at EMR in Pennsylvania. The Rutgers team came in 6th out of 7 being beaten by Drexel, both West Point teams, Purdue and Stevens. As can be imagined, the team was not happy.
Fall 2000
Due to a lack of tournaments, the club mainly focused on practicing and developing drills. Steve Bienstock decides to retire from running the paintball club altogether. Ken Carter takes over as VP.
Spring 2001
The club continues practicing. They also learn of the next NEIC tournament at West Point in March. The club attends in weather that goes from below freezing to near whiteout conditions. The two Rutgers teams placed 4th and 6th out of 8, the Rutgers A team missing 3rd by 8 points to Purdue.
The standings being:
- UMass
- Stevens
- Purdue
- Rutgers A
- West Point A
- Rutgers B
- West Point B
- RPI
Alex Elliott steps down from running the club and hands over leadership to Ken Carter as President and Matt Minetti as VP.
Fall 2001
For the first time ever the club attends two tournaments in one semester. The first is the West Point invitational where the two teams placed 9th and 12th out of 14. Big ups to West Point for putting on such a good tournament.
The club attended the Fall 2001 NEIC championship at Top Gun in November. After leading the prelims by over a hundred points, the A team went into the finals and pulled out second place. The two teams shot 36,000 paintballs or about 18 cases to do so.
The top four broke down as follows:
- Drexel
- Rutgers
- Drexel
- West Point A
This semester marked several first for the club including first time to go to the finals and first time to finish in the top two.
Spring 2002
The Scarlet Knights continue to ascend the ranks of college paintball teams across the nation. Off to a bit of a shaky start at the first NEIC at West Point with Team A finishing 5th and Team B finishing 8th, but hopes remained high for the upcoming national championship in Illinois.
After a long, grueling day of rain and mud, Rutgers proudly takes home the trophy for the third best college paintball team in the country! Here are the results in Rutgers' division for all of the rounds:
